Healthcare is a Right Bestowed to All Americans by our Founding Fathers

“Liberty is to the collective body, what health is to every individual body. Without health no pleasure can be tasted by man; without liberty, no happiness can be enjoyed by society.”
Thomas Jefferson

Everyone is an constitutional scholar these days. If you are insured you argue that healthcare is not a right bestowed on all Americans. Well, Thomas Jefferson does not seem to agree. In his quote, he is telling us is that without good health there is no liberty and without liberty there is no happiness. If you don’t have access to healthcare, you will not have good health. According to Jefferson, then, healthcare is a right; the same as education and protection.

We have to figure out a way for all Americans to have good affordable healthcare. The argument that “I work hard so why should I pay for some slouch to have healthcare” does not hold water. The majority of the uninsured and underinsured are working Americans whose employers either do not offer health insurance or the plans offered are unaffordable. If we do not solve the escalating costs of healthcare, we will head down the same road as the banking crisis. As long as we have a for profit healthcare system our healthcare will remain among the lowest qualtiy in the Western world.

Insurers will continue to cherry pick their customers because it is not profitable for insurers to insure or pay the healthcare expenses of sick people. In order to make a profit they must deny care! THE MORE CARE THE LESS PROFIT. the only solution I can see is either strictly regulation of the healthcare industry or provide healthcare for everyone through a system akin to Medicare.
