High Profits=No Healthcare-Demand Healthcare Reform Now!

Where can you expect to have the most expensive, least accessible, and unsafe healthcare system? Right here in the United States! Yes, you read it right; in the good old USA, where loosing your job means loosing your healthcare and perhaps, ultimately, loosing your house! Healthcare expenses are the leading cause of bankruptcy in the USA.

Over 170 million Americans receive health insurance through the private market. The vast majority receive insurance through their place of employment (60%) while 9% purchase insurance privately. Twenty seven percent receive government sponsored insurance while 16% have no coverage at all.

According to a new report examining financial trends in the insurance industry, the combined profits of the nation’s largest insurance companies and their subsidiaries increased by over 170 percent between 2003 and 2007. The report, which is available in full at nwfco.org, adds to already compelling evidence that the insurance industry is using deliberate tactics designed to maximize profits by raising premiums, co-pays and deductibles; refusing coverage or charging exorbitant rates to people with pre-existing conditions; and even retroactively denying coverage to people with insurance. Here are the facts:

  • Costs are UP: Insurance premiums rose over four times as fast as wages between 2000 and 2006. (Kaiser Family Foundation)
  •  Quality is DOWN: A Consumer Reports survey indicated that nationwide, 29 percent of adults with insurance had “coverage so meager they often postponed medical care because of costs.” (Consumerreports.org)
  •  Industry Profits are through the roof: Between 2003 and 2007, the profits of the nation’s largest insurers (United Health and WellPoint )rose 170.2 percent, to $12.6 billion. (nwfco.org)

We cannot let the insurance companies (and the states that fail to regulate them) continue to rip off the public and deny us the healthcare we deserve. We don’t have to re-invent the wheel here, there are a couple of dozen countries who cover all of their citizens and statistically speaking have better health outcomes than we do. Here we have allowed the insurance companies, politicians and healthcare providers literally get away with murder so they can make more money, for far too long. We need a single provider system that provides all Americans with healthcare. Insurance companies should not be profiting from the misery of people!

America-the time has come to back the Obama Administration and demand healthcare reform before it’s too late. Don’t wait until you’ve lost your home and are living in your car because you were bankrupt after having a life-saving procedure. Call your representatives and demand action!!
